Random porn rant

After seeing a friend's post (she posted this link, but Alternet seems to be experiencing technical difficulties, so here is another, similar article) about the increase in "labiaplasty" and "cosmetic gynecology" which are fluffy names for voluntary genital mutilation, I couldn't stop myself from ranting about porn's influence on society. So, here is, yet another, Facebook comment turned blog:

Porn is great in THEORY. Who doesn't like to watch people fuck? People won't even grab the remote when animals fuck on the Discovery Channel. It's natural. Most people are naturally curious and horny. People like to glimpse into other people's lives without having consequence. That's what every sitcom, reality show, documentary, and social network banks on. However, with porn UR DOIN IT WRONG.

Porn is absolutely horrific in practice. It's an industry that highly dictates young sexuality in unpleasant and dangerous ways. It's an industry that relies almost exclusively on abuse victims or victims of circumstance. It's an industry that necessitates human trafficking. It's an industry that plays up racial and cultural stereotypes that even KKK propaganda would be ashamed of. It's an industry that has completely escaped OSHA somehow. Thus, it's an industry that regularly and purposely endangers its employees' health because someone might find that fun to watch. It's an industry that literally encourages abuse by showing what a thrill it is.

If you took all the fucking out of porn, took just the CONCEPTS that are regularly encouraged porn, like racism, rape, sexual assault, pedophilia, physical abuse, the spread of disease, lying about condom use, NO ONE would support it....but somehow because "Well, teehee, it's just porn, it's just fantasy, so it's ok," quiets even the loudest of folks who shout about oppression in mainstream media. If a woman is "too skinny" in Cosmo, we go on crusades to get the magazine to stop photoshopping or to start featuring other types of models. We have whole fat tolerance, fat acceptance non-profit organizations created basically for this purpose. We have whole self esteem non profits. We have whole companies whose only job is to try to tell young people (young women in particular) that they actually are human and deserve basic love, respect, and human rights. All of this is because of a few frivolous fashion magazines.....but if something is irrefutably, irredeemably terrible in porn, we shrug it off with, "Well, there ya go...it's just porn."

Yeah...it's JUST PORN....It's not like it's some major influence on developing minds or anything....it's not like it's literally ruining young women's sex lives, which is likely to ruin their sex lives for the rest of their adult lives. It's not like it encourages people to have unprotected sex. It's not like it has created a significant percentage of men who'd rather watch it and jack off than have a real relationship with a real woman, even if it's strictly a sexual one. It's not like it encourages men to treat women like cum dumpsters.

Oh, wait.....

We know all of this, then we have the balls to wonder why we have such a terrible rape culture problem.

These are not the rantings of some religious, sex-hating prude. They are the rantings of anyone who has lived in America in the age of technology and is being honest with themselves. All that said, I am NOT a fan of censorship. I don't think porn should be banned. I don't even know that it should be regulated (though, it's only fair that if EVERY OTHER business on earth has massive regulations that porn should be made to join the party). That wouldn't solve anything, but many things are undeniably WRONG with the way it is practiced.

The main problem is people REFUSE to care. It's not that they don't care. They vehemently insist on looking the other way and/or finding justifications to do so. If they knew what porn really was things would be different. Hell, people even refuse to each Chick-fil-a because it indirectly supports gay abuse....I think if most people knew how women REALLY were treated on set...if they knew what practices were REALLY common, a lot of them might re-think their choices or might only support "homegrown" porn made by "local artists," if you will.

Sadly, like anything else we know exists, is unpleasant, and threatens our own senses of morality and justice, we will do anything to divert our attention from the negative parts so we can continue to sadistically enjoy what we feel we have a right to. This is a regular human problem for everything from starving kids in Africa, to the AIDS crisis, to Wall St. to Papa John's to porn. If we start caring, then...well...fuck, we might ACTUALLY have to change things....and if we ACTUALLY change things well...you know...porn might, like...not be as neato as it is now. Better to stay ignorant and quiet so I know I'll be guaranteed to keep my porn. People will do anything so that no one will "take away" their precious porn, even if the thief of their enjoyment is their own sense of justice. They just look the other way because we all know, once you've stared the beast in the face, you can't unsee what you've seen.

Once again, we wouldn't accept the abuses that we regularly see in the porn industry ANYWHERE else....not even for those jobs we think of as only done by the lowest class of people whose health and wellbeing are for sale. The, "Derp, but it's PORN so all bets are off," mindset prevails! This needs to change.

The Documented Effects of Pornography (Yes, I know it's a Christian website, but the data cited is what's important)

Sorry for the novel, but this is something I care deeply about....and I didn't always because before, I just didn't want to know.
